• A section on dental roentgenology was approved by the American Dental Association at the urging of Drs. H. Cline Fixott, Sr. and LeRoy M. Ennis and began activities with Dr. Fixott as chairman.

1949

• The annual section meetings inspired a few farsighted professionals who founded the American Academy of Oral Roentgenologists in October, 1949 at a meeting in San Francisco.

1951

• The Academy was renamed the American Academy of Oral Roentgenology in 1951,

1967

• The Academy was renamed the American Academy of Dental Radiology

• First American Board Diplomates in Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology approved.

• The Academy was renamed the American Academy of Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology.

1999

• Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology achieved specialty status from the American Dental Association to become the 9th Dental Specialty

Today

• The Academy has a membership representation in the various dental professional fields and members of the dental radiographic industry.
