The University of North Carolina School of Dentistry, Department of diagnostic Sciences offers a graduate training program in oral and maxillofacial radiology leading to the Master of Science degree.

The program prepares students for academic and/or private practice careers in oral and maxillofacial radiology and features training in radiation physics, radiation biology and protection, imaging technology, and interpretation. In addition, a strong background in microscopic and clinical pathology is provided for strengthening the graduate student's understanding of clinical correlations with radiologic findings. The three-year program is designed to prepare students for board certification eligibility as set forth by the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology

The program includes training in the interpretation of advanced modality images such as magnetic resonance, and CT and CBCT. In addition the curriculum provides for a strong research emphasis, preparing students for academic careers. Combined degrees with other supporting disciplines are possible at the Master and PhD level.

The Radiology Section of the Department of Diagnostic Sciences collaborates with other clinics and academic departments in the School of dentistry and UNC Hospitals and on campus in the areas of health physics, computer sciences, medical physics, as well as other related biomedical and clinical sciences. The faculty has published extensively in the scientific and clinical literature and is actively involved in patient care.

Candidates for admission must have a DDS degree or equivalent and are required to take the Graduate Record Exam (GRE). In exceptional circumstances the GRE may be waived. Applicants are also urged to apply for the institutional Dentist/Scientist Award available at the University of North Carolina which combines clinical training with PhD training.

The School of Dentistry will be accepting applications for admission through January 15 of the year in which admission is sought. Stipends may or may not be available for training support depending on state funding. Tuition remission may also be available. Funding levels are determined year to year.
