Scientific Sessions

Abstracts are being sought for the 59th Annual Session in the areas of experimental research, literature reviews, clinical case reports, innovative/new technology applications, or educational methods. Here is how to submit your Abstract:
Categories and general criteria for the review of abstracts are as follows:

Scientific papers: a structured paper, demonstrating scientific methodology, specifically including the Aim or Purpose, Materials and Methods, Results and Conclusions.

Case Reports: Should demonstrate clinical information about a patient or collection of patients. Scientific methodology is not necessary but the presentation should include pertinent findings, differential diagnosis, and discussion of the imaging modalities used to make the definitive diagnosis.

Innovative technologies and/or techniques: Can be descriptive abstracts without scientific methods or those with limited pilot data.

Advanced Oral and Maxillofacial Imaging Techniques: Can be descriptive abstracts without scientific methods. Intraoral radiographic techniques considered to be basic knowledge are not appropriate. Presentations should address application of state-of-the-art imaging techniques and/or technology.

Educational papers: Application of new techniques and/or technology in the instruction of imaging

International participants should submit abstracts as soon as practicable especially if Visa issues may be a concern.
Abstract Instructions
These instructions must be followed explicitly. Abstracts not conforming to the instructions below will not be considered for review.
Type your abstract using Microsoft Word using the instructions on the Abstract Format page below. The abstract should not exceed one page. Please note that there is a change in format this year. The style of OOOOE must be followed for abstract construction, especially for references.
Title: The title should be limited to 12 words and describe the content of the abstract. Titles should be indicative of the findings.
Author(s) and Institution(s): List presenting author first. Each author should be listed with institution, city, and country if other than USA. Please refer to the Abstract Format page. The abstract must commence with the names of the authors followed by the title of the paper then the institution. Author names must start with family name followed by initials without periods and different author names separated by commas. No degrees or academic positions may be listed in the abstract.
Structured Content: Use the structured format described in the Abstract Format page.
Ethical review: An explicit statement of human subjects ethical approval must be included in the Methods section.
Abstract Review
A panel of referees will review all abstracts. Abstracts will be chosen for electronic publication in OOOOE by the referees. Indicate on the application form whether or not you wish to have your abstract published if it is selected.
Deadline for Abstract Submission
July 25, 2008
Notification of Status
Authors will be notified by e-mail regarding the status of their abstracts, including date and time of oral presentation when appropriate. All presenters will be required to register for the meeting. All accepted abstracts must be presented by one of the authors. Any authors who do not appear to present their abstracts will not be permitted to submit an abstract for the next year. Authors who fail to appear twice will no longer have abstracts accepted.

Type of Presentation
Please indicate whether you wish to present your abstract in poster or oral format. All oral presentations are limited to twelve minutes, with three minutes for questions. All oral presentations must be given electronically. An LCD projector and laptop computer will be provided. Bring your presentation on a CD or USB flash memory stick/drive.
Preference will be given to hypothesis driven research. In the event that requests for oral presentations EXCEED the time available, authors will be given the option to participate with a poster presentation. Please indicate your preference:

Conflict of Interest Declaration
A conflict of interest may exist if an individual giving a presentation is affiliated with or has financial interest in the subject matter of the presentation. The intent of this Declaration is to openly identify any potential conflict so that attendees have full disclosure about the material presented, not to prevent a speaker with an affiliation or financial interest from making a presentation. The prospective audience must be made aware of any affiliation/financial interest via an acknowledgement in the program announcement, in accordance with ADA CERP standards. Note that receiving grant support from an agency external to any products or services reported on is not a conflict of interest and should be reported under Acknowledgements.

All headings should be typed in bold face, upper and lower case, 12-point Arial type, and left justified. Use the headings as they appear in this example for your abstract, when appropriate.
For abstract content use normal face, upper and lower case, 12-point Arial type, left justified for the text. Do not indent the first line of paragraphs. Use single line spacing. Do not exceed one page. Avoid abbreviations.
All references indicated numerically in the text and listed fully in conformity with OOOOE style.
Illustrations and graphs must be provided separately as high resolution TIFFS as well as incorporated into the abstract. A figure legend is needed for each and each figure should be referenced in the abstract text.
The abstract text is to be provided both with (for Abstract Book) and without (for OOOOE publication) embedded figures and tables. All tables must be provided as separate Word documents for publication in OOOOE. Such figures and tables should also be referenced in the body of the abstract and include a legend/caption.
The titles and authors/institutions should be at the beginning of the abstract in the same format as used in OOOOE.

Background
Summarize pertinent background information on the topic addressed in the abstract. If pertinent, identify the gap in knowledge that this abstract addresses.
Objectives
Identify the principal objectives of the research.
Methods and Materials
Describe methods and materials used in the research, including statistical methods, if relevant. When humans or animals are used provide assurance that appropriate approval has been obtained. Include statement of human ethical approval here, if appropriate.
Results
Describe the principal results of the investigation including results of statistical analyses. Graphs, tables, or figures are encouraged in addition to text.
Discussion (or Conclusion)
Explain and interpret results in light of the objectives. Address how your findings compare to those of others. Highlight advances in the field. Identify major conclusions and implications of your research.
References
Cite references, if appropriate, using the style of Oral Surgery Oral Medicine Oral Pathology Oral Radiology Endodontology.
Acknowledgements
Acknowledge significant individuals, institutions, or financial or material support contributing to this abstract.
