DIRECTORY OF ADVANCED EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMS

INTRODUCTION

This directory is an attempt by the American Academy of Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology to provide information on advanced education programs to prospective applicants.

It is expected that the directory will be revised periodically to accommodate new programs and to delete those which have been discontinued.

If any program has been omitted, the program director is encouraged to supply the appropriate information in the format of this directory to the Executive Director of the Academy for inclusion in the next revision. The address to which to mail the information is given below.

United States programs are listed alphabetically by state followed by Canadian programs listed alphabetically by province. A format is used which provides a description of the program, followed by the name, degrees, address and telephone number of the person to contact for further information about the respective program. If program directors wish to include additional information in future directories, they should communicate their wishes to the Executive Director at the following address:

Master of Science
Stomatology is the science of structure, function, and disease of the oral cavity. Study methods include examination of related histories, evaluation of clinical signs and symptoms, and use of biochemical, microscopic, and radiologic procedures to establish a diagnosis and a plan for therapeutic management.

The postdoctoral programs are diverse and flexible. Four educational tracks, emphasizing oral and maxillofacial pathology or oral and maxillofacial radiology, allow postdoctoral students to obtain advanced clinical, didactic, and research-related education while pursuing a Master of Science degree.

M.S. in Stomatology with Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology Emphasis
Dental school graduates in this program pursue a comprehensive study of basic and health sciences in preparation for teaching and research. A minimum of 30 semester hours of satisfactory graduate credit is required. Candidates for the M.S. prepare and submit a thesis based on the results of research conducted during their course of study.

Certificate in Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology and M.S. in Stomatology with Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology Emphasis
This program combines the minimum requirements of the certificate and master's degree programs. Completion time is usually 36 to 48 months. The educational requirements of the certificate program in oral and maxillofacial radiology meet the requirements for preparation of dental specialists as set forth by the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology.

Facilities
Facilities reserved exclusively for the Department of Oral Pathology, Radiology, and Medicine include a radiology special procedures area, interpretation room, seminar room, tutorial laboratory for training small groups of graduate and undergraduate students, computer simulations area, surgical oral pathology laboratory, and a clinical pathology laboratory with areas for histopathology, hematology, clinical chemistry, and immunology.

In addition, the College of Dentistry has joint use research laboratories that are well equipped and staffed for conducting research involving histology, histochemistry, materials technology, radiobiology, ultrastructure, and electron probe analysis and quantification. The department also maintains a library/seminar room.

Admission
Applicants must have successfully completed an accredited program leading to the D.D.S. or D.M.D., or a foreign equivalent, and must qualify for admission to The University of Iowa Graduate College. To be considered for admission, applicants must have a 3.00 cumulative grade point average (on a 4.00 scale) or foreign equivalent.

All applicants must take the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) General Test. Students from countries whose primary language is not English must present evidence of satisfactory performance on the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) and the Test of Spoken English (TSE).

Final decisions on acceptance of applicants who meet the requirements for admission are made by the department faculty. A personal interview may be requested.

Number of positions available: Usually 1 per year .

Stipend / Tuition : Stipend available only to American citizens, Tuition varies by semester

The University of Missouri-Kansas City offers graduate training in oral and maxillofacial radiology. The 24-month program begins July 1 and leads to certification in oral and maxillofacial radiology. The 30-month program leads to certification in oral and maxillofacial radiology and a Master of Science degree in oral biology. A separate application process is required for admission into the Master of Science degree program.

The curriculum is designed so that at the completion of the program, the graduate will be eligible to take the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology exam. If accepted into the Master of Science degree program, additional courses and original research are required. On satisfactory completion of a thesis and the required courses, the Master of Science degree will be awarded.

One student is accepted into the program per year. Applicants with a DDS/DMD degree from a school accredited by the American Dental Association or Canadian Dental Association are preferred. Graduates of dental programs not so accredited will be considered on a case-by-case basis.

Students may be eligible for a stipend. Contact program director for details.

CANADA:

ONTARIO

University of Toronto

The Faculty of Dentistry, University of Toronto offers a three year programleading to Master in Science degree. The graduate is eligible to sit for both the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology and the Fellowship of the Royal College of dentists of Canada examinations.

This radiology course, established in 1965, stresses the prescription and analysis of imaging modalities to diagnose abnormalities of the maxillofacial region. Patients are seen by the residents either in the dental radiology department or in one of the associated teaching hospitals, where the student obtains experience prescribing the appropriate imaging procedures (approximately325 patients per year). This course of study provides extensive experience in intraoral and extra oral radiography, tomography, arthrography, sialography, nuclear medicine, computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging. Intensive courses in oral pathology and a specific course of disease mechanisms applied to radiology provide an understanding for the mechanisms by which pathologic conditions alter the appearance of tissue structures, which, in turn, provides the basis for radiologic interpretation. Radiology rounds conducted with medical radiology residents highlight the use of advanced imaging to diagnose abnormalities of the head and neck.

Radiation biology, the physics of radiology, statistics and epidemiology, disorders of the temporomandibular joints and experience in undergraduate teaching are included.

Applications must be received by September 1 for enrollment in the following year.
