A. Duties of an Oral and Maxillofacial Radiologist
Oral and maxillofacial radiologists (OMR) produce and interpret images of the jaws, teeth, bone and other structures of the head and neck region. Radiologists are involved in the diagnosis and management of diseases, disorders and conditions that affect this area of the body. The imaging modalities utilized by radiologist for diagnosis and evaluation may include traditional x-rays, digital imaging of structures within the mouth and outside of the mouth, computed tomography (CT) scans of the head and neck, MRI (magnetic resonance imaging), as well as ultrasonography (ultrasound imaging).
OMRs receive extensive training in taking and assessing radiographs. Oral and maxillofacial radiology is a recognized specialty and most OMRs will have received certification of their specialty training through the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology.
Most OMRs have an academic appointment and are affiliated with a medical/dental school or health science center. However; some OMRs may elect to establish a private practice in radiology. OMRs, whether practicing in an academic setting or in private practice have the training and expertise needed for evaluation of radiographic images of the head and neck.
